In a Saturnian World Anne-Mie Van Kerckhoven in The Renaissance Society at the University of Chicago opening exhibition on sunday 25 September 2011 from 16.00 until 19.00 hrs featuring an artist talk between 17.00 and 18.00 hrs. Anne-Mie Van Kerckhoven’s artistic output includes a diverse array of mediums including painting, drawing, collage, computer animation, installation, and zines. Van Kerkhoven synthesizes disparate visual and textual elements in her work. Her illustrational technique favors hard-edged flat planes in a neon RGB palette, with her most common imagery being drawn from pre-sexual revolution soft pornography. She appropriates text from a range of discourses, including philosophy, science, poetry and theology. Her work addresses metaphysical reflections on mind, body, universe and perception. The Renaissance Society will present four new bodies of work, including numerous new works on paper; an interactive computer animation; and a related series of computer generated prints. The new work will be supplemented with selections of work from throughout her career. Pluriform I and Pluriform II are interactive animations that can be accessed on-line. Kirchwey is Associate Professor of the Arts and Director of the Creative Writing Program at Bryn Mawr College. He is also the Andrew Heiskell Arts Director at the American Academy in Rome. Thursday 17 November 2011 at 18.00 hrs Reading / Alice Notley Notley has earned a reputation as one of the most challenging and engaging poets at work today. Fiercely independent, she has never tried to be anything other than a poet, and all of her ancillary activities have been directed to that end. She has published over 25 books of poetry, including Grave of Light: New and Selected Poems 1970-2005 (2006), awarded the Lenore Marshall Poetry Prize; Disobedience (2001), awarded the Griffin International Poetry Prize; Mysteries of a Small House (1998); The Descent of Alette (1996); Close to me & Closer . . . (The Language of Heaven) and Désamère (1995); To Say You (1994); The Scarlet Cabinet (with Douglas Oliver, 1992); Homer's Art (1990); At Night the States (1988); Parts of a Wedding (1986); Margaret and Dusty (1985); and Sorrento (1984). Thursday 1 December 2011 at 20.00 hrs Concert / Club Moral Club Moral, an experimental industrial noise band founded in 1981 by Anne-Mie van Kerckhoven and Danny Devos, achieved cult status from day one; cult status being defined by peers such as Throbbing Gristle. Initially a band and a performance venue, Club Moral was a definitive staple of Antwerp’s underground scene of the 1980s hosting acts and collaborations such as Boyd Rice (NON), Michael Moynihan (Coup De Grace), Slave State, Whitehouse, Trevor Brown, Clair Obscur, and John Duncan. Although the venue ceased operating in 1993, the now four-piece outfit survived intermittent periods of inactivity and various line-ups only to become legendary amongst a new generation of goth/industrial/electronic/noise hounds. After three decades of performances throughout Europe and Asia, this marks their U.S. debut. This event will take place in Bond Chapel (on the main quadrangle of the University, directly east of Cobb Hall). Her dual appointment as lawyer by day and experimental writer by whenever makes her a handful and a head-full.
